At 8.20 on the evening of the 19th of November, 1960, the coastguard informed the honorary secretary that a boat had been reported flashing a light, and that calls for help had been heard off the Esplanade Hotel, Seaford. The weather was fine, with a light south-westerly wind and a choppy sea. At 8.30 the life-boat Kathleen Mary was launched on a flood tide.
