Aith, Shetlands. At 7.5 on the evening of the 10th of December, 1960,a doctor at Walls telephoned the honorary secretary to say he had received an urgent call from the Island of Foula, and that a patient might have to be conveyed to the main island for hospital treatment. There was a light east-north-easterly wind and a slight sea. The tide was ebbing. At 7.58 the life-boat The Rankin put out with the doctor on board and reached Foula at 11.35. The patient and doctor were embarked at one o'clock in the morning and the life-boat made for Lerwick, where the patient was landed and taken to hospital. The life-boat returned to her station at 5.40. The doctor ex- pressed his appreciation of the service rendered, which undoubtedly helped to save the patient's life..
