Shellduck

Hastings, Sussex. At 1.50 on the afternoon of the 22nd of July, 1960, the life-boat mechanic asked the coastguard to keep a catamaran under observation.

As the weather was becoming rapidly worse and the boat could not be seen because of heavy rain squalls, it was decided to launch the life-boat M.T.C., which put out at 2.54. It was two hours before low water, there was a strong south-westerly breeze, and the sea was rough. The life-boat came up with the Shellduck, which was yawing badly, five miles east-south-east of Hastings. She had three men and a girl on board. The life-boat escorted her to Rye and then returned to her station, arriving at 6.22.

A donation was made to the Institu- tion's funds. Rewards to the crew, £9 16s.; rewards to the helpers on shore, £24 12s..
