At 11.20 on the night of the 17th of August, 1960, the coastguard informed the honorary sec- retary that red rockets had been sighted to the south-east in the direction of Papa Westray. The life-boat John Gellatly Hyndman put out at 11.40 in a gentle westerly breeze with a slight sea.
