Clovelly, Devon. At 4.45 on the after- noon of the 18th of July, 1960, a message was received that the owner of Lundy Island had injured his hand so badly that he needed medical attention urgently. No other boat being available, the life-boat William Cantrell Ashley was launched at 5.30 in a fresh westerly breeze and a moderate sea. The tide was half ebb. The injured man was embarked and landed at Clovelly, where a doctor was waiting, and the life-boat arrived back at her station at 10.15.

The owner of Lundy Island made a donation to the Institution's funds to cover the cost of the launch. Rewards to the crew, £9 12s.; rewards to the helpers on shore, £10 16s..
