At four o'clock on the afternoon of the llth of July, 1960, the coastguard informed the honorary secretary that a motor boat had broken down with engine trouble near the Bell Rock off Prestwick. The life-boat James and Barbara Aitken put out at 4.25 in a gentle north-westerly breeze and a slight sea. It was two hours after low water.
