At seven o'clock on the evening of the llth of June, 1960, the coastguard informed the honorary secretary that a motor fishing vessel had fired a red flare on a bearing west-by-south of Elie Ness. At 7.10 the life-boat James and Ruby Jackson was launched in a fresh westerly breeze and a moderate sea. The tide was half ebb.
