Friendly Star
Thurso, Caithness-shire. At 7.15 on the morning of the 21st of December, 1959, the coastguard informed the honorary secretary that the motor fishing vessel Friendly Star of Lowestoft had broken down with engine trouble west of Dunnet Head. The life-boat Pentland (Civil Service No. 31) was launched at 7.30 in a north-westerly wind of nearly gale force and a rough sea. The tide was beginning to flood.
Three fishing boats were seen making for the position given. Two of them, the Girl Mary and Yukon Star, took the Friendly Star in tow to Scrabster harbour, the life-boat escorting them.
The life-boat reached her station at one o'clock. Rewards to the crew, £16 5s. ; rewards to the helpers on shore, £2 13s..
