Captain E. S. Carver

Captain E. S. Carver, who died at Littlehampton on the 12th of December, 1959, at the age of 81, first joined the Institution's staff as Eastern District Inspector in 1919 after service in the first war, in which he had commanded a Q-ship. After nine years as Eastern District Inspector he served as Western District Inspector for two years and as Superintendent of the Depot from 1931 to 1939, when he became Acting Chief Inspector. He had reached the normal retiring age in 1938, but stayed on at the request of the Committee of Man- agement until December 1943, when he retired on medical advice. For the part he played in the rescue from the Hopelyn in 1932 he was awarded the Institution's silver medal for gallantry..
