Avis

Lytham-St. Anne's, Lancashire. At 10.15 on the night of the 9th of August, 1959, the owner of the yacht Avis told the honorary secretary that the yacht, which had two men on board, was over- due on passage from Beaumaris to Knott End, Fleetwood. The coast- guard were informed and were asked to make enquiries. No further informa- tion was forthcoming, and as the yacht had not arrived at Knott End the next morning, the life-boat Sarah Townsend Porritt put out at 11.15. There was a calm sea with a light south-easterly wind blowing and a flood tide. The life-boat found the Avis at anchor near Gut Gas buoy in the Ribble estuary.

The yacht had developed engine trouble and was taken in tow to Lytham. The life-boat reached her moorings at 1.20.

The owner made a donation to the Institution's funds. Rewards to the crew, £7 4s. ; rewards to the helpers on shore, £3 10s..
