A Rowing Boat (1)

Clacton-on-Sea, Essex. At 4.27 on the afternoon of the 27th of July, 1959, the coastguard informed the honorary secretary that a small rowing boat was anchored off Holland-on-Sea near the buoy marking the sewer. Her occupant was waving a handkerchief for assis- tance. At 4.45 the life-boat Sir Godfrey Baring, with the second coxs- wain in command, was launched in a moderate sea. A moderate south- south-westerly wind was blowing and the tide was flooding. The man in the boat had been fishing and was very sea- sick. He was taken aboard the life-boat, which also picked up his boat. Con- ditions were not suitable for rehousing the life-boat at Clacton, and she con- tinued to Brightlingsea. On the way she went to the assistance of a small yacht which appeared to be in difficul- ties and escorted her to safety. She then landed the man and his rowing boat at Brightlingsea. She returned to her station on the 29th of July. A letter of appreciation was received from the rescued man. Rewards to the crew, £14 19s. ; rewards to the helpers on shore, £4 18s..
