Sarah Ann

Holy Island, Northumberland. At five o'clock on the morning of the llth of May, 1959, the skiff Sarah Ann left harbour to fish for crabs and lobsters.

By 10.30 all the local fishing boats with the exception of the Sarah Ann had been back in harbour for over two hours, and as there was a thick fog and a heavy swell it was decided to launch the life-boat Gertrude. She left at 10.44 in a light easterly wind and found the skiff, which was skippered by the life- boat's second coxswain, east-north-east of Emmanuel Head. The life-boat escorted the boat into harbour, arriving at 11.25. Rewards to the crew, £7 ; rewards to the helpers on shore, £3..
