Swanage, Dorset. At 10.7 on the morning of the 17th of May, 1959, the coastguard informed the assistant honor- ary secretary that four canoes on passage from Swanage to Poole appeared to be having difficulty in rounding the Old Harry Rock. As there was a choppy sea the life-boat Edmund and Mary Robinson, which was on temporary duty as the station, was launched at 10.22.

There was a gentle north-easterly wind and an ebb tide. The life-boat found the canoes on a lee shore to the north of the Old Harry Rock.
