A Catamaran (1)
Dover, Kent. At nine o'clock on the morning of the 28th of June, 1959, the coastguard informed the honorary secretary that a catamaran with a broken mast was trying to reach shore under a temporary sail in Wear Bay two miles east of Folkestone. Two fishing boats near by had offered help, which the catamaran's crew of three had refused. At 1.5 the coastguard reported that the catamaran had anchored about forty to fifty yards off Warrow Apron with little chance of reaching shore.
As the wind and sea were increasing, the life-boat Southern Africa left her moorings at low water at 1.33 in a strong west-south-westerly wind and a rough sea. She took the catamaran in tow to Folkestone and returned to her station, arriving at 3.40. Rewards to the crew, £7 9s..
