The S.S. John Carrington

Caister, Norfolk. At 3.30 on the afternoon of the 15th of January, 1959, the coastguard at Great Yarmouth in- formed the honorary secretary that a vessel was stationary a quarter of a mile east of Winterton. She was not at anchor and was making no distress signals. The weather was foggy, and there was a slight swell. A light north-westerly breeze was blowing, and the tide was ebbing. At 4.10 the life- boat Jose Neville was launched and found the s.s. John Carrington ofLondon aground. The coxswain put one of his crew aboard, but the captain informed him that the steamer's owners had summoned a tug. The life-boat stood by until the tug arrived and was preparing to connect a tow wire when the John Char ring ton refloated. The life-boat reached her station at 11.30.
