Coxswain Philip Boyle

Coxswain Philip Boyle of Arranmore died on the 23rd of November, 1958, at the age of 60. He was appointed coxswain of the Arranmore life-boat in 1949 after having served as a bowman from 1935 to 1944 and second coxswain from 1944 to 1949. He took part in one of the outstanding services by a life-boat during the last war, when the Arranmore life-boat rescued eighteen survivors of the S.S. Stolwijk of Rotterdam. On that occasion he was acting second coxswain and was awarded the bronze medal for gallantry.
