At 12.15 on the afternoon of the 5th of October, 1958, the coastguard informed the coxswain that a message had been intercepted from the collier Brent Knoll that the fishing vessel Cossack was in difficulty seven miles east-south-east of Haisborough light- house. At 12.40 the life-boat Louise Stephens was launched in a rough sea, with a strong south-south-westerly wind blowing and a flood tide.
