French Life-Boat Disaster

THE life-boat Vice-Amiral Schwerer stationed at Etel in France capsized near the entrance to Lorient harbour on the 3rd of October, 1958. Her whole crew of five, consisting of the coxswain, mechanic, radio-operator and two other members of the crew, lost their lives and the life-boat was destroyed. Among those rescued when another boat overturned was Dr. Alain Bombard, who was carrying out some experiments at the time. On hearing of the disaster the Institution sent an expression of deep sympathy to the Societe Centrale de Sauvetage des Naufrages..
