At 10.10 on the morning of the 4th of September, 1958, a message was re- ceived from Ballymacaw harbour that a fishing boat had broken down with engine trouble a quarter of a mile off shore. At 10.15 the life-boat Annie Blanche Smith was launched in a heavy swell. A fresh easterly wind was blow- ing and the tide was ebbing.
