A Dinghy and San Toy

Beaumaris, Anglesey. At 2.50 on the afternoon of the 4th of August, 1958, the coastguard informed the honorary secretary that a small boat with an out- board motor had broken down off Penmon Point. At three o'clock the life-boat Field Marshal and Mrs. Smuts was launched in a rough sea, with a near north-westerly gale blowing, and an ebb tide. She found a dinghy and took her crew of two on board, where they were given hot drinks. The dinghy was also hauled aboard and the life-boat returned to Beaumaris pier, arriving at 4.45. Shortly afterwards the coxswain saw the yacht San Toy dragging her anchors in the bay and knew she was in danger of drifting on to the pier. The life-boat went to her help and towed her to a safe anchorage off Gallows Point half a mile away.

The life-boat finally reached her station at six o'clock. Rewards to the crew, £9 12s. ; rewards to the helpers on shore, £2 2s..
