At 2.15 on the afternoon of the 20th of March, 1958, the fishing boat Mystical Rose of Wexford, which was on charter to the Wexford harbour commissioners for duties as a pilot boat, had not returned to harbour and was reported to be overdue. The life-boat Douglas Hyde put out at 2.45 in a moderate sea, with a fresh east- south-easterly wind blowing and a flood tide. The life-boat came up with the Mystical Rose, which had a crew of four, and found that her engine had broken down.
