Eidolon

Clovelly, Devon.—At 9.59 on the night of the 31st of August, 1957, the Hart- land Point coastguard reported that the yacht Eidolon, of Plymouth, was firing red flares six miles south-west of Hartland Point. Her steering gear had broken and she was drifting- dangerously. The life-boat William Cantrell AMey was launched at 10.15 in a rough sea. There was a fresh north-westerly breeze blowing and the tide was flooding. The life-boat came up with the yacht, which had three men, two women and two children aboard, and passed a line to her. She began to tow her to Clovelly, but the tow line snapped and was reconnected only with difficulty. The life-boat finally arrived back at her station at 7.15 on the morning of the 1st of September. The owner made a gift to the branch funds.—Rewards to the crew, £15 is.; rewards to the helpers on shore, £14 Ss..
