Defender

New Brighton, Cheshire.—At 8.48 on the evening of the 26th of January, 1957, the Formby coastguard tele- phoned that the motor vessel Defender, of Liverpool, had stranded on the revetment wall near the south end of the Formby channel. The life-boat Norman B. Corlett put out at 9.10.

There was a heavy sea. a moderate westerly gale was blowing, and the tide was ebbing. Soon after the life- boat reached the position a number of tugs also arrived. They tried to tow the vessel off but failed, and as the tide ebbed it was clear they would not succeed that evening. The life-boat remained alongside all night, and at eight o'clock the next morning the Defender refloated on the rising tide.

The life-boat returned to her moorings, arriving at 10.15.—Rewards to the crew, £30 10s.; rewards to the helpers on shore, £2 10,9..
