Whitsun

Arranmore, Co. Donegal. — On the evening of the 9th of April, 1956, the motor vessel Whitsun, of Groningen, was discharging a cargo of piles. About 6.35 a heavy ground swell developed, and she parted her lines and began to be driven on to the rocks in the middle of Leabgarrow Strand. The captain asked for the life-boat, and as there was no other suitable boat available, the life-boat W. M. Tilson was launched with a westerly wind blowing.

She managed to put a line on board, which prevented the Whitsun from going on the rocks, and returned to her moorings at 11.30. At 12.35 early on the 10th she put to sea again and towed the vessel to prepared moorings.

She finally reached her station at 6.30.
