Portrait on the Cover

THE portrait on the cover is of Cox- swain John Watters, who has been coxswain of the Fowey, Cornwall, life-boat since 1934. In 1947 Cox- swain Watters was awarded the bronze medal for the rescue of seven men from the auxiliary motor vessel Empire Contamar, of London. Seven men had to be hauled through heavy seas in a gale. Before going out on this service Coxswain Watters had been injured by a fall, but in spite of this he insisted on taking command of the life-boat..
