Portrait on the Cover

THE portrait on the cover is of James Thomas Upperton, the coxswain of the Shoreham Harbour life-boat. Cox- swain Upperton first joined the crew in 1910. He became second coxswain in 1940 and in 1947 he was appointed coxswain. He is a holder of the silver medal with clasp. He was first awarded the silver medal for a war- time sevice on the 16th of Novem- ber, 1941, when 21 lives were rescued from a minesweeper. His second award was for the rescue of 6 people from a yacht on the 8th of August, 1948.
