A R.A.F. Shackleton Bomber
Holy Island, Northumberland. — At 7.42 in the evening on the 25th June, 1952, a R.A.F. Shackleton bomber crashed into the sea seven and a half miles north-east of Emmanuel Head, Holy Island. The life-boat J. B.
Proudfoot, on temporary duty at the station, was launched at 7.44 in a smooth sea with a light south-easterly wind blowing. She found that two survivors had been picked up by H.M. Submarine Sirdar, took them on board and landed them at Berwick.
She then returned to the burning aeroplane and searched, but without success, for other survivors. When all hope of saving life had been given up she returned to her station, arriving at 1.20 in the morning1.—• Rewards, £14 19s..
