OFF the Kentish coast there lie, Sands of treacherous make, Which swallow many a ship, Who luckless get in their wake.

They say that Earl Godwin made, A terrible curse upon Any ship that passed that way, Would come to grief thereon.

Many a ship with luckless crew, Were sunk by night and day, Before any help could reach them, To save lives, which at danger lay.

But we are triumphant now, With life-boats and gallant men, Sail out to distressed ships, And bring them home again..
