THE portrait on the cover is of Cox- swain John Daniel, of Aberystwyth.

He joined the crew in 1911, was ap- pointed bowman in 1933, second cox- swain in 1936 and coxswain at the beginning of 1943. He retired at the end of 1949, having then served for over sixteen years as an officer of the life-boat, and was awarded an annuity and a coxswain's certificate.

His father was second coxswain for twenty-one years..
