Lerwick, Shetlands.—At 2.55 in the afternoon of the 15th of February, 1950, the Medical Officer of Health telephoned asking if the life-boat could fetch from Fair Isle a woman suffering from appendicitis. As no other suit- able boat was available the life-boat Lady Jane and Martha Ryland left her moorings at 3.24. She embarked a doctor, and made for Fair Isle in a rough sea with a strong south-westerly breeze blowing, reaching the Island at 9.45. Here the patient was put on board the life-boat, which left for herstation at 10.30 and transferred the woman to a waiting ambulance on arrival at Lerwick at 4.25 the next morning.
