Fryken

Hartlepool, Durham.—At 10.5 on the night of the 24th of September, 1949, in dense fog, the coastguard telephoned that he thought the motor vessel Fryken, of Kristinehamm, Sweden, was on the rocks near the Heugh lighthouse; and at 10.35 the life-boat The Princess Royal, Civil Service No. 7, was launched.

A light north-westerly breeze was blow- ing with a moderate sea. The life-boat found the vessel two hundred yards north of the lighthouse, pounding heavily, and took her in tow, to prevent her being washed inshore. But she could not hold her. The life-boat's second coxswain then boarded her and another attempt was made, again unsuccessfully. Finally, at the master's request, the life-boat returned for a tug and took soundings. She passed a towing wire from the vessel to the tug, which then refloated her and towed her to harbour. Escorted by the life-boat, they arrived at 6.30 the next morning.
