The S.S. Colytto

Barrow, Lancashire.—At 7.20 in the evening of the 21st of April, 1949, information was received that one of the crew of the s.s. Colytto, of Rotterdam, which was anchored one mile south-west of Lightning Knoll Buoy, urgently needed a doctor. As no other boat was available, the life-boat Elsie, on temporary duty at the station, was launched at 8.15 with a doctor on board. A strong west-north-west breeze was blowing, with a rough sea. The life-boat could not get alongside in that sea, until the Colytto got under way and made a lee for her. She then took oft the sick man and returned to her station at 11.45, where an ambulance was waiting.
