Longhope, Orkneys.—At 10.10 on the night of the 3rd of March, 1949, rockets were seen in the direction of Swona, and the life-boat crew assembled while the coastguard made enquiries.

At 10.30 they reported flares to the north of Swona, and the life-boat Thomas McCunn was launched at 10.40.

A moderate southerly breeze was blowing, with a swell and heavy rain, and the night was very dark. The life-boat found the motor fishing boat Mazurka, of Peterhead, drifting towards the Lowther Rock, South Ronaldsay, with her engine broken down. She had a crew of seven.
