The Bravest Deed of 1948

THE "Miss Maud Smith's reward for courage, in memory of John, 7th Earl of Hardwicke," for the bravest deed of the year has. been awarded to Coxswain Frederick Upton, of Walmer, for the rescue of thirty lives from the Italian steamer Silvia Onorato, wrecked on the Goodwin Sands on the 2nd of January, 1948.* * A full account of this rescue appeared In The Lifeboat for March, 1913..
