The Swedish Training Ships Falken and Gladan and Jinty

Torbay, Devon.—On the evening of the 7th of August, 1948, a sudden gale got up from the south-east, and anxiety was felt for the crews of the two Swedish training ships Falken and Gladan,. anchored off Paignjon for the yacht racing in Torbay in the games of the XIV Olympiad. They were on an exposed dead lee shore in shallow water.

The motor life-boat George Shee was launched at 9.45 in rough seas with heavy rain. Before she reached the training ships the life-boat saw signals from the outer harbour and found the motor yacht Jinty on fire, following an explosion in the pantry. It had done considerable damage, but fortunately the crew of nine were all on deck at the time. The life-boat stood by while they were all taken off by other boats and then went to the Swedish ships to see if there was need for her to stand by or to guide them to a safer anchorage.

She found that the officer commanding was ashore, so she went to Torquay and there embarked him, another officer and nine cadets. With them she returned to the Falken. 'The officers got aboard despite the heavy seas, but it was too rough for the cadets to attempt it, so the life-boat brought them back to Brixham, where they were accommodated on H.M.S. Bar- bastel for the night. Meanwhile the life-boat kept watch on the Swedish ships until the storm abated just after midnight.—Rewards, £7 16s..
