Providence

Margate, Kent.—During the evening of the 23rd of July, 1948, the sister of the skipper of the local fishing vessel Providence reported that the Providence had gone out fishing early that morning and was long overdue. The coast- guard was informed, but he could not see her, and at 10.50, as it grew dark, the motor life-boat Lord Southborough, Civil Service No. 1 was launched. The sea was slight, with a moderate south- westerly breeze blowing. The life-boat found the Providence with her engine broken down a mile north-west of South "West Longsand Buoy. She had been •drifting for twelve .hours and her crew of two were without food. They were given soup, biscuits and water from the life-boat's stores and were towed to Margate. The life-boat reached her station again at half past four the fol- lowing morning.—Rewards, £15 18s..
