Happy Days

Margate, Kent.—At 8.6 in the morning of the 12th of August, 1948, information was received from S.S. Holdernene, through North Foreland Radio and the coastguard, that a motor launch was in need of help near the Elbow Buoy.

She was the motor yacht Olga, of Antwerp. The Holdernene was stand- ing by her in a strong northerly wind with a very rough sea. At 8.14 the motor life-boat Lord Southborough, Civil Service No. 1, was launched. She found that the steamer had taken the Olga in tow, but it was too dangerous for the yacht and the life-boat took over the tow, first putting a life-boatman aboard to help man the pumps and keep her afloat. She then made for Rams- gate Harbour, arriving at 10.50. She helped free the yacht of water by pumping and baling and then left for her station. On her way she saw signals at 2.30 from a boat one and a half miles off North Foreland. She was the Broadstairs motor boat Happy Days with a rope round her propeller.

She had five people on board. At the request of her skipper the life-boat towed her to Broadstairs, which she reached at 3.10. She arrived in Margate Harbour at four o'clock.

The weather was too rough to put her in the house, so she remained afloat throughout the night, with her crew in readiness for further service. The weather moderated next morning and she was rehoused at 11.30.—Property Salvage Case.—Rewards, £39 2s..
