Ella (1)

Gourdon, Kincardineshire ; Arbroath and Montrose, Angus.—At 12.20 in the morning of the 8th of July, 1948, the Gourdon coastguard reported to Gour- don life-boat station that the rowing boat Ella, with a crew of three, was expected, but had not arrived. She had last been seen off Rockhall Point, about one and a half miles south-west of Johnshaven. A north-north-west gale was blowing, with a rough sea. The motor life-boat Margaret Dawson was launched at 12.37 and made a wide search. She continued to search for over six hours, and at seven minutes past seven she received a wireless mes- sage that the Ella had been found hanging on to a salmon net and that fishermen had helped to bring her ashore. Just before she received this message her engine had stopped, owing to faulty wiring and her crew called for the help of the -Arbroath life-boat as they hesitated to attempt to start the engine again in case of fire. The life- boat then set sail, southwards towards Arbroath. The fishing boat June Rose appeared and offered her a tow. The tow was not needed, but as the life-boat now had company the crew gave her engine another trial, and at nine o'clock got it running again. The news of her breakdown reached Arbroath through the Gregness coastguard at seven o'clock, and the life-boat John and William Mudie was launched at 7.10, but she stuck in sand and mud at the foot of the slipway. At 7.50 a message that the Gourdon boat was in trouble was received at Montrose, and at 8.20 the No. 1 life-boat The Good Hope was launched. She found the Gourdon life- boat five miles south of Red Head. By this time, however, 9.30 in the morning, the Gourdon crew had started their engine again. The Good Hope escorted her to the shelter of Montrose Bay and then returned to her station. Montrose got back to her station at 10.40, Gour- don at 11.45 and Arbroath at two o'clock in the afternoon.
