The Sailing Barge Gladys

A FAMILY BARGE IN PERIL Fishguard, Pembrokeshire.—At 8.7 in the morning of the 2nd of August, 1947, the coastguard reported that a sailing barge was in difficulties and had asked for help three to four miles east-north- east of Strumblc Head. At about 8.20 'she flashed the SOS. signal and at 8.30 the motor life-boat White Star was launched, in a fresh to strong south- south-east breeze with a choppy sea.

She found the sailing barge Gladys, of London, bound for the Clyde with the owner, his wife, three men and two children on board. The barge had been converted into a house-boat and litted with a small motor. Her sails had been blown away and she was making heavy weather. At the owner's request the life-boat towed her to Fishguard, and arrived back at her station at 1.30 in the afternoon.— Property Salvage Case..
