Aith, Shetlands.—On the 10th of March, 1947, a doctor at Walls tele- phoned that he had a man patient who must be taken to hospital for an operation. The road to Lerwick was impassable with snow, and as no other boat was obtainable he asked if, on the following morning, the life-boat would take him. The motor life-boat The Rankin put out at 9.0 next morning. A strong north-east wind was blowing and the sea was rough. It was extremely cold, and snow was falling. The life-boat took the man on board at Footabrough and landed him at Scalloway. The road there was snowbound and no ambulance could reach it, but a private car was found to take him to Lerwick. The life-boat returned to her station at 7.45 that evening. — Rewards, £23 11s. 6d..
