THE portrait on the cover is of Coxswain William Hughes, of PorthdinUaen, Caernarvonshire, who was appointed coxswain in 1933. He was then a retired master mariner who had been brought up in coasting and deep-water square-rigged sailing ships, and had been running to South American ports.
