At 9.5 P.M. on the 27th July a telephone message was received from the coastguard that flares of distress were being shown one mile N.E. of Rhyl Pier. A strong and increasing W.N.W. wind was blowing and the sea was rough. The pulling life-boat Caroline Richardson put out at 9.15 P.M. She found the small motor yacht Penguin, bound for Con way, with two men on board, in a rather dangerous position, with her auxiliary engine useless. The coxswain advised the owner to drop anchor, and the crew of two were then taken off and landed by the life-boat at midnight.
