Life-Boat Essay Competition In the Potteries

THIS year the Potteries were again very successful in the life-boat essay competition for elementary schools.

They won five prizes in the inter-school competition in the Midlands. One of these five prizes was presented by the Mayoress of Stoke-on-Trent and two by Mrs. Elizabeth W. Montford, J.P., of Market Drayton, Shropshire, patron of the Stoke-on-Trent Ladies' Life-boat Guild, who recently gave the Institution £3,000 to provide a motor life-boat, now complete to be named Royal Silver Jubilee, 1910—1935.

Mr. J. F. Carr, director of education was among those who supported Mrs.

Montford. In the course of his speech he said to the school: " We must always try to help this most wonderful Institution. One of the finest appeals that touches the heart of the Englishman is that of the life-boat service.

I want you all to go to your parents when you go home and tell again the stories you have heard this afternoon.".
