Mayflower

When the mail steamer Isle of Sark arrived from Jersey on the morning of the 9th January, the captain reported to the harbour master that a small steamer appeared to be in difficulties about three miles S.W. of Sark. He had seen large volumes of steam coming out of her funnel, and a signal had been raised, but owing to poor visibility and the position of the sun, he was unable to distinguish the flags. Although there was no wind, and the sea was smooth, the motor life-boat Queen Victoria put out at 10.30 A.M., in the absence of another suitable boat. She found the steamer—the Mayflower, of Liverpool —about five miles east of Sark light- house. She carried a crew of eight, and was bound in ballast from Guernsey to Jersey, but her boiler had burst.

The life-boat towed her back to St.

Peter Port and returned to her station at 2.30 P.M.—Property Salvage Case..
