On the morning of the 18th January the Reculvers coast- guard telephoned that a vessel in Gore Channel was flying a two-flag signal.

A strong W.S.W. breeze was blowing, with a moderate sea. The motor life- boat Lord Southborough (Civil Service No. 1) was launched at 11.40 A.M., and found the barge Teresa, of London, bound from the Humber to Rye with a cargo of coal. Her rudder had been damaged, but a motor boat near-by had already put some men on board, and with their help she was taken into Margate harbour, with the life-boat in attendance.
