31st Janu- ary. A hulk without lights had broken away from her tug off Chapel St. Leonards, thirty-five miles from the life-boat station. It was believed that a man was on board. The sea was heavy, with a strong northerly wind and rain. After searching throughout the night without success the life-boat returned at 10 A.M., having been at sea for twelve hours. It was learned later that there had been no one on the hulk.
