Several local motor fishing boats, and one motor coble, went out fishing early on the morning of the 7th December. Later a strong E.S.E. breeze sprang up, the sea became rough, and it was raining.

At noon the conditions were getting worse and it was decided to launch the motor life-boat Herbert Joy II in case her help should be wanted. She went about a mile in a north-easterly direction and fell in with the Mizpah, which she escorted into harbour. She then made four more trips in the same direction and accompanied in the B. S.
