Coxswain E. Matthews, of the Lizard, Cornwall

Coxswain Edwin Matthews, of the Lizard, has died at the age of eighty- seven. He became second coxswain in 1867, and coxswain in 1876, retiring in 1900 after thirty-three years as an officer ot the life-boat. During that time the station rescued 108 lives.

In April, 1888, Coxswain Matthews was awarded the silver medal of the Institution for valuable and brave services, and on his retirement he received a certificate of service and a pension..
