At 10.30 A.M. on the 20th | May the Coastguard reported that the i Cockle Lightvessel was firing warning ; guns. A little later the St. Nicholas i Lightvessel also fired, and it was decided to send out the Motor Life-boat John and Mary Meiklam of Gladswood.

She was bound with a cargo of coal from Sunderland to Oran, and carried a crew of thirty.
