A telephone message was received from the Coastguard at 1.53 P.M. on the 6th January that the s.s. Jersey City, of Bideford, had broken down and was in distress ten miles off the Bishop Rock.

Preparations to launch the Motor Life- boat Cunard were at once made, but were cancelled on receipt of a further message that the vessel was off the South Bishops, 115 miles to the north- ward.
